Deciding when to begin SAT/ACT prep depends on a few factors:
1) Math Level: It is best if a student has completed at least 1 semester (ideally a full year) of Advanced Algebra.
2) Schedule: Try to choose a 3–4 month window in which school demands and extracurriculars/sports are at a low point.
In general, prepping anywhere from the summer before junior year through the summer before senior year is a great time. However, some students who prefer a more gradual approach and/or who are more advanced may choose to start during sophomore year.
Yes, we prepare students for the PSAT 9/10 as well as the PSAT for juniors.
Both tests are accepted equally by all US universities, so the choice really depends on the student's learning style and strengths. When we speak initially with a family, we look carefully at the student's learning style, whether they have extended time, and which test they feel more confident with. We also do diagnostic testing in both tests, and with all of that information, we help determine whether one exam is likely to suit the student better, or whether it makes sense to evaluate both before committing to a plan.
In some cases, it may be appropriate for a student to prep with one of us only. However, we strongly suggest that students scoring below 750 in either area prep in that area. This is for two reasons:
1) It is often easier to improve on your stronger side. For example, getting from 700 to 750 in your stronger area may be easier than getting from 650 to 700 in your weaker area.
2) It is much easier to increase your overall score most substantially if you split the increase over both areas (for example, achieving a 100-point increase in math and a 100-point increase in verbal is much easier than a 200-point increase in one or the other).
Yes, we are experienced in helping families navigate the accommodations process.
Most students prep for 2–4 months. However, the timeline varies based on the student's starting score, goal score, frequency of sessions, and individual factors.
We begin with an initial conversation to understand the student, the coursework, and what kind of support would be most useful.
